We’ve gone from the Lincoln Douglas debates to the AP having to post that JD Vance did not have sex with a couch only to retract it. The rationale behind the retraction: the AP is unable to verify that JD Vance didn’t have sex with a couch.
What are memes?
Webster’s defines memes as “an interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially social media.”
Memes are a part of our culture now. Some have become so iconic that they are now part of the cultural zeitgeist. Think "distracted boyfriend" from 2015. Then there's "change my mind" and "Drake."
The JD Vance stuff exploded last week, and it’s been brutal. If you are Vance. For the rest of us, it has been unmitigated hilarity.
JD Vance has had to fight off such memes as "JD Vance had sex with couch" and "dolphin porn." Look, JD Vance is supposed to be a smart person. Supposed to be. But he's an idiot when it comes to politics, and he's going to keep stepping in it. I'm enjoying it, though, and I think we will see more classic memes about Vance.
Vance has done himself no favors with comments about “childless cat ladies.” He’s ignited female ire (rightfully so) such that people from all age groups are actively looking for things to create memes about involving Vance.
There is some belief that it is Generation Z driven, and the ability to create impactful memes is a unique genius all its own. If you doubt such things, just look at the power of slogans and images used by companies. Here is a great summary of the use of memes against Vance (and in general):

Forgive the foul language. I didn’t write it, but you see the point. And the savage impact.
We live in a meme culture, and we will only see more of them. Expect many, many memes during the current election cycle.
